Star rating tells you less than you'd think. Here's what actually predicts whether a hotel will work for your trip.
Star ratings are a rough proxy at best — a 4-star business hotel and a 4-star boutique villa can deliver very different trips. A few more specific questions tend to matter more.
Location versus price
A cheaper hotel 40 minutes from everything you want to see often costs more in the end, once you count transfer time and taxi fares. For short trips especially, paying slightly more to stay central is usually worth it.
Amenities that actually matter
- Breakfast included — a real cost saver on multi-day trips.
- Airport transfer — removes one point of stress on arrival.
- Pool or spa — matters more for resort-style trips than city breaks.
- Reliable WiFi — worth confirming directly for remote work trips.
Questions worth asking before booking
- Is breakfast included, or added at checkout?
- What's the cancellation window?
- Is the property currently under renovation? (Worth checking directly — listings don't always update in time.)
